– Year 1: Mow habitat stands to a stubble height of 8” or higher. – Year 2: Consider a prescribed burn during the dormant season (November – March) in place of mowing. If you can’t burn, mow to a stubble height of 10” or higher. For established areas, prescribed fire or spot mowing are more effective tools than whole field mowing for dealing with invasive species in established habitat areas. Do not mow or burn between April 15th and October 15th. – Some program rules allow mowing or burning after August 1st. Waiting until October ensures that pollinators have sufficient habitat and that monarchs can load up on nectar for their fall migration.
